Megafon Group and RosGeo signed a contract for performance of joint offshore surveys within the framework of the project for installation of an underwater fiber-optic communication line from Europe to Asia. The expedition will begin on August 5, 2020 in Murmansk and last for three months.

The research vessel of RosGeo "Professor Logachev" will pass the most complex from the ice situation point of view sections of the route in the Barents, Kara, Laptevs, East Siberian and Chukotka seas. The total length of the section to be surveyed in 2020 is 6500 km.

“We are starting the expedition in a year favorable from the point of view of the ice situation. In 2020, we will conduct a preliminary survey of the bottom relief and identify the safe route line in the Arctic seas. The second part of the survey will be held in 2021 and include a detailed survey of the engineering conditions for underwater cable installation, including those associated with exploration of the seabed rocks. Similar activities are planned for the communication line sections located  outside the Russian waters. The offshore surveys will be the first phase of the project, these surveys are needed to determine the optimal route of the communication line installation along the Russian Arctic and selection of the sites for outcomes to the coastal territory,” - said Gevorg Vermishyan, Director General of Megafon .

“We are pleased that the competences of RosGeo that possesses the tremendous experience in the offshore geological and engineering explorations in the Arctic and Far East will be demanded in implementation of the ambitious communication project. The company operates the largest fleet of research vessels in Russia, equipped with modern equipment, including multi-functional underwater vehicles of in-house development, which have proved the effectiveness in the exploration of the oceanic floor. I am sure we will duly achieve the objectives set", - said Sergey Gorkov, Director General - Chairman of the Board  of RosGeo.

Arctic Connect project will connect with fiber-optic communication line the continents, where live 85% of the world population. It will provide the users with an unprecedented short signal transmission time with minimal latency, which is not offered by any one of the existing lines. The sideline connections, built from the base line, will provide the communication services for the consumers of the Arctic and Far East, including the fuel and energy industry enterprises, which will contribute to the socio-economic development of the region. The start of the communication line specified with the traffic capability of 200 Tbit/s will assist to cope with the growing volumes of the world data traffic.
